The St Thomas More College (STMC), Sunnybank community welcomed Bishop Bill Morris to celebrate mass in the college chapel recently.
The last time Bishop Morris celebrated mass in the chapel building was in 2013 when it was located at Cooranga North in Jandowae Parish in the Diocese of Toowoomba. That day the community was celebrating the 75th Anniversary of their local church – and sadly, its final mass. The church was being decommissioned and listed for sale.
Cooranga North residents Mick and Cheryl Cosgrove were at the 2013 mass and Mrs Cosgrove reflected on the uncertainty of the church’s future: “The church could have been turned into a hay barn… we were very unsure of its future when it was listed for sale.”
The church was purchased by St Thomas More College and in June 2017 and transported more than 380kms to Sunnybank, was renovated and commissioned as the college chapel in March 2018.
Mick and Cheryl Cosgrove made the journey to Sunnybank to attend mass with Bishop Morris, this time in the newly renovated Chapel.
“It’s lovely to see our church restored and loved as the central heart of STMC,” Mrs Cosgrove said.
At the mass, Principal Les Conroy spoke of the privilege of stewardship and the chapel’s importance to the school community: “It is used every day – it is the central lifeblood of our school community.”
“We care for the chapel as a community, we hold weekly masses and staff and student prayer sessions here,” Mr Conroy said.
Also, Mick and Cheryl Cosgrove’s son, Michael was in attendance. Along with Tricia Kennedy from Brisbane Catholic Education, members of the STMC Student Leadership Team, and the College Leadership Team.
